Dinner seats at James Earl Jones event going fast
If you think you might want to enjoy dinner with James Earl Jones on Wednesday, March 26, you had better act fast.
Seating is limited and reservations for the 6 p.m. affair are arriving daily, according to the office of development. The $25 ticket price includes dinner with Jones and admission to his 8 p.m. address in Decker Gymnasium. To make reservations, call 4292.
Jones is scheduled to arrive on campus , Wednesday, March 26 to attend a reception for African-American, honors program and selected theater students at 4 p.m., the dinner at 6 p.m. and the talk at 8 p.m. Tickets to the 8 p.m. address are $5 general admission and free to MU students with ID.
Jones, a star of such films as "The Great White Hope," "The Hunt for Red October," and "Field of Dreams," was originally scheduled to appear at MU in April, but signed a movie deal, making an earlier date necessary.
Jones first came to international acclaim in Stanley Kubrick s "Dr. Strangelove" opposite George C. Scott. He earned a "Most Promising New Actor" award from the Hollywood Foreign Press and an Academy Award nomination for his role as "Jack Johnson" in the film version of "The Great White Hope," plus a Golden Globe Award and NAACP Image Award for his role in the 1974 film "Claudine."
His distinctive voice, perhaps the most famous speaking voice in the world today, has enriched recordings of everything from classic dramas to Bell Atlantic commercials to the character of "Darth Vader" in the "Star Wars" trilogy.
Jones appearance is made possible in part by a Social Equity grant from the Office of the Chancellor, State System of Higher Education.
Women s Arts & Culture Week has something for everyone
What has made Women s Arts & Cultures Week special each of the last three years is its way of focusing attention on the achievements of women with events that appeal to everyone. The fourth annual week continues that tradition with a broad mix of music, poetry, art, international perspectives and comedy beginning March 23.
Organized by the Women s Studies faculty members Andrea Harris and Lynn Pifer, activities open with the concert "Music By Modern Women" at 7 p.m. in Steadman Theatre, featuring Keiko Abe, Emma Lou Diemer and others.
The Vesta Women s Art Collective will display work in various media by local artists beginning Monday at noon in the North Hall Community Room. Exhibit hours will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.
Mansfield women artists will also hold an exhibit beginning at 1 p.m. Monday in the Old University Gallery in Manser Hall. Hours are 1-4 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Global perspectives from Russia, Egypt and other countries will be the subject of International Women s Night Tuesday at 7 p.m. in North Hall s Traditional Reading Room.
The popular Women s Open Mic program will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Manser Hall s North Dining Room featuring women from the local and university community. At 7 p.m. a discussion on "Living, Working, Thinking: Non-traditional Women Students" will take place over a pot luck supper in Memorial Hall 204 at 7 p.m.
"Writing Our Lives: A Reading of Women s Autobiography" will be held Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in North Dining Room. The program will feature writers Mimi Bixby, Judith Sornberger, Louise Sullivan-Blum, and Kath Thompson.
"Parallel Lives," comic vignettes on women s lives by Angelique L. Hawkes and Susan Guinter, will be held in Straughn Hall at 7 p.m.
Author, talk-show host to speak here on relationships
"Relationships" expert Ellen Gootblatt will speak Thursday, March 27, at 8 p.m. in Allen Lecture Hall.
A nationally syndicated advice columnist and author, Gootblatt was the host of the #1 rated ABC evening radio talk show heard in 39 states, "Getting Together with Ellen Gootblatt."
She is the author of "Meeting, Dating, Relating and Mating: 250 Important Questions To Ask Before You Go Further In A Relationship." She lectures across the country speaking at hundreds of colleges and universities on such topics as values, morals and ethics; sex, passion and intimacy; straight talk for straightforward relationships; how to have confidence in all areas of your life; and "Men Aren t Women!: Celebrating The Differences between Men and Women."
Entertaining and motivational, her talk will cover family relationships, siblings, friendship, careers, health and nutrition, values, morals and ethics and any other relationship and quality life issues that directly and intimately impacts upon a person s life.
Saturday, March 22, 3 p.m., Steadman. Mo Sze But will present a junior piano recital of works by Bach, Prokofiev and St. Saens.
Saturday, March 22, 8 p.m., Steadman. The MU Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Michael Galloway, music, will perform.
Sunday, March 23, 2 p.m., Steadman. Nicole Santell will perform a junior trumpet recital of works by Kennan, Goedicke and Neruda.
Sunday, March 23, 7 p.m., Steadman. MU music faculty will take part in the "Music by Modern Women" performance to kick off Women s Arts & Culture Week."
Monday, March 24, 8:30 p.m., Steadman. The Bowling Green Saxophone Quartet will perform.
Tuesday, March 25, 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Steadman. Fourteen area choirs will perform throughout the day as part of the MU Choral Festival. William Weinert from Eastman School of Music will be guest clinician.

Harry Hillson, head baseball coach, reports that he's received the first four responses to his baseball camp web site (http://www.mnsfld.edu/~publrela/camps/baseball.html). The responses came from four players in France who plan to attend this summer. Hillson s web site was built by studentKeith Bishop, who has since moved on to help Graduate Studies build its web site.
Steve McEuen, music, has added a new section to the music department web page for alumni E-Mail addresses. So far there are 25 and he welcomes all alumni who either graduated from the music program or took part in a music group to add their e-mail address to the list. Those who submit information should instrument/voice and either year of graduation or years you participated in Music Department activities. McEuen's e-mail address is smceuen@mnsfld.edu.
The season may be over but the senior men s basketball trio of Lawrence Culver, Louis Judson and Kenny Woseley continue to set new school records. All three were named to the ECAC South Division II All-Star Basketball Team announced today, setting a new school record for the number of selections in a year. Culver and Judson were named to first team honors while Woseley was selected to the second team. Mansfield had the most selection of any of the 28 teams in the ECAC South region.
Wrestlers Joel Brinker and Steve Hawk missed earning All-American honors by one win at the NCAA Division II National Championship in Fargo, ND. Brinker finished the season with a school record 36-8 mark and established a new school mark with 13 falls. Hawk ended his season at 14-10. The Mountaineers finished 27th in the team championship.
Nikki Noaeill earned her third straight NCAA Division II All-American honor with an eighth place finish at the NCAA Division II National Swimming Championship in San Antonio TX. Noaeill, who finished sixth last year, placed eighth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.32. The top eight finishers are awarded All-American recognition. Noaeill picked up her second All-American recognition of 1997 with a 15th place finish in the 100 backstroke. In earning the honor, she set a new school 100 backstroke record with a time of 1:00.95.
