Mansfieldians, MU Jazz Ensemble offer Halloween treat
For the fifth straight year, the Mansfieldians will team-up with the MU Jazz Ensemble for an evening of popular song classics Friday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. in Steadman Theatre.

Under the direction of Peggy Dettwiler and Michael Galloway, music, these renowned ensembles have each performed at national conferences in recent years. This year's concert again features vocals with big band accompaniment on songs like "I've Got You under My Skin," "Stormy Weather," "My Funny Valentine," "Ain't Misbehavin'," "Over the Rainbow," "More than You Know," "Satin Doll," "Fly Me to the Moon," "Beauty and the Beast," and "It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing," among others.

Featured vocal soloists include Valerie Eisenhour of Elizabethtown, Sharlyn Hazekamp of Allentown, Scott Piergrossi of Reading, and Laurie Toole of Middletown, NJ.

Audience members are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes as awards will be given for the best dressed! Come, join the fun, and listen to some great jazz.

Murphy sax recital features music from Spain, Tunisia
MU saxophone professor Joseph Murphy will present a recital of music from Spain, Tunisia and the United States Sunday, Oct. 26, at 3 p.m. in Steadman Theatre.

Murphy has studied with some of the best saxophonists in the world, including Fred Hemke, John Sampen, and Jean-Marie Londiex (as a Fulbright scholar). He is an educational clinician for the Selmer Corporation, and has written several pedagogical articles on the saxophone. He has performed in Europe, Japan, and the U.S., and has recorded on the Erol (France) label and Opus One.

Assisting him in the performance will be Dr. Nancy Boston on piano and Stephen Stalker on cello, both members of MU's music faculty.

Boston is a prolific performer, having appeared in concerts throughout the United States, as well as France, Italy, Russia, and Canada. In addition to the standard piano repertoire, she has done extensive study in the area of music by women composers.

Stalker has extensive experience as a recitalist, chamber musician, and concerto soloist. He is principal cellist in the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra and a member of the Catskill Chamber Players. As a member of the Madison String Quartet, he was a finalist in the Naumberg Chamber Music Competition in New York City and the International String Quartet competition in Evian, France.

SCHOLAR'S SPOTLIGHT

Richard Feil and Stephen Brown, psychology, attended the fourth Northeastern Symposium for Teachers of Psychology, this year held at Ithaca College. It was the fourth year in a row the psychology department has been represented at the symposium. Brown also recently attended the conference "Supporting Your Children in Challenging Times" at Cornell University.

Joe Maresco, vice president for student affairs, reports that he has returned to work on a part-time basis and is recovering well. He sends out his thanks to the many students and staff who sent wishes for a speedy recovery.

The field hockey team dropped a 5-1 decision to East Stroudsburg University on Tuesday afternoon at Whitenight Field, but won its three previous games, bringing its record this season to 6-7 overall and 3-4 in the PSAC East. Sophomore standout Shanna Vitale was named PSAC Field Hockey Player of the Week for her outstanding performance in the week ending Oct. 19. She scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Millersville, was credited with an assist in a 2-0 win over Mercyhurst and scored three goals, including the game winner in a 4-3 overtime win over nationally ranked Longwood. It marks the first time in school history MU has had two players named PSAC Field Hockey Player of the Week. Tandy Carey won the award on Sept. 27.

The football team suffered a breakdown in special teams play that led to the first 30 points in a 44-0 loss at Kutztown Saturday. Jason Donadi had 73 yards rushing for the Mountaineers. Freshman Chris Olsen had three catches for six yards while Wellsboro's Nate Davis gained 52 yards on five carries. Matt Hanley had a team-high seven tackles while Brad Polk had five tackles and a sack for minus 14 yards. The Mountaineers, who fell to 0-7 overall and 0-3 in the PSAC East, host West Chester at 1 p.m. Saturday.

COMPUTER CORNER

Computer news provided by Academic Computing Support

The university is considering replacements for the current Windows 3.1 operating system. Alternatives currently under consideration are Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT.

The university is also considering a change from the Corel WordPerfect Suite of office software to the Microsoft Office suite.

The Datatel conversion is now not expected before spring 1998. Therefore, AV00A will probably be used for advising through spring ‘98.
