MU Theatre brings comedy to Straughn
Live theatre in the 1950s will provide the backdrop for the MU Theatre presentation of "Moon Over Buffalo" Oct. 15-18 in Straughn Hall.

Directed by Michael Crum, the play takes a comical look at a theatre scene ravaged by the relatively new invention of TV and the struggles of a pregnant actress to find her AWOL husband and impress famed director Frank Capra enough to land the lead in his next big-screen film.

The play's author, Ken Ludwig is a two-time Tony Award nominee and a founding member of Washington's Shakespeare Theatre. He wrote the Broadway hits "Crazy for You" and "Lend Me a Tenor," as well as the screenplay for the Columbia Pictures film of "Lend Me a Tenor."

The play's cast includes Bonnie Remus of Buffalo, NY; Laurie J. Toole of Asbury Park, NJ; Katie Mason of Scranton; Erin Owens of Reading; Janmichael Brennan of Carbondale; Adam Snyder of Sunbury; Christopher Hill of Williamsport; and J. Scott Shade of Lock Haven.

Assisting Crum with the direction is Joel Fritzinger of Lehighton.

Shows will be Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 15-17, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m.

Tickets will be available at the door at a cost of $5 for adults, $4 for students and senior citizens and $2 for MU students. All tickets are open seating.

Gershwin's popular music is focus of jazz concert
The music department will present a free concert of George Gershwin favorites featuring the Mansfieldians vocal ensemble and the MU Jazz Ensemble Friday, Oct. 23, at 8 p.m. in Steadman Theatre.

The list of well-known Gershwin tunes includes "Embraceable you," "Fascinating rhythm," "S'Wonderful," "Strike up the band," "Someone to watch over me," "Love is here to stay," "Somebody loves me," and "Summertime," among others.

Gershwin, born 100 years ago, died at the age of 37 after a short but prolific career as a pianist and composer of popular and classical repertoire.

The concert, directed by music faculty Peggy Dettwiler and Michael Galloway, will celebrate his popular music through a variety of jazz styles.

Staff Scene

The first MU weekend program went off without a hitch when five students and three faculty and staff members took part in a double elimination racquetball tournament, Friday, Oct 3, at the Rod Kelchner Fitness Center. Shaker Ramasamy, chemistry, earned first place. Students Justin May and Che Regina finished second and third, respectively. Check with Donna Milicevich, Student Affairs Administrative Assistant (ext.4930) for a list of other student/staff/ faculty events planned throughout the Fall semester.

Ann Klinger, public relations and publications, received a phone call from Gene Fessler recently. Nothing unusual about that. Except Fessler, retired from the A-V office, was on his car phone calling from outside Fayetteville, NC, where he happened to be driving alongside Klinger's daughter, Jennifer, an August 1997 graduate. Jenny was on her way to Mansfield from her new residence in Florida to spend some time with her family. Small world.

SPORTS UPDATE

Call it a moral victory. The football team was given little chance of beating Millersville but the Mountaineers, on the strength of a bend-but-don't-break defense, trailed by just 13-6 at halftime and were driving deep into Millersville territory down by 10 late in the game before a 64-yard pass interception return by Harold Vinson ended any upset hopes. "Anyone who saw this game knows we played well today and have been getting better all season long. Our defense really came up with some big plays today against one of the best teams in the conference. If they (Millersville) don't make that interception and return it for a touchdown who knows what might have happened," Head Coach Joe Viadella said. On the strength of the 37-13 win, Millersville improves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC East while Mansfield falls to 0-5 and 0-1 in PSAC East play. Mansfield travels to West Chester Saturday

Todd Stewart finished strongly once again as he took second place in a field of 103 runners at the 18th Annual SUNY Geneseo Cross Country Invitational. Gary Keirn placed 26th as the MU men finished eighth in the team standings. The Lady Mountaineers took fifth place at Geneseo in a 5k race. Nichole Beckel finished 17th overall with Brianne Liddick just behind in 18th.

Forward Kristen Dunton scored both goals on the afternoon as the field hockey team blanked IUP 2-0 to snap a seven-game losing streak. Goaltender Jen Manton made 21 saves to earn her first shutout of the season while facing 29 shots from the Indians. Mansfield heads back to the road this Saturday for a matinee contest with Mercyhurst College.
