Film series offers wide variety
MU's Spring Film Series opens Thursday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m. with the Marx Brothers' 1935 classic "A Night at the Opera" in Allen Lecture Hall.
Groucho, Chico, and Harpo Marx perform their hilarious send-up, which includes the "stateroom scene," which may well be the funniest five minutes in film history.
The film series continues Thursday, Feb. 19, with the 1996 film "Basquiat," the true story of African American painter Jean Michel Basquiat, who died tragically at the age of 27. The film features Jeffrey Wright, David Bowie, Courtney Love, and Parker Posey.
On Thursday, Feb. 26, the series will present four surrealist short films: "Entr'acte" (1924); "Ghosts Before Breakfast" (1927); "Un Chien Andalou" (1929); and "Mindscape" (1976). The films are sponsored by the Art Guild.
Other films include:
*"Paris is Burning" (1990), Thursday, March 19. Jennie Livingston's hip, award-winning documentary examines the competitive costume & drag ball scene within the gay male African-American and Hispanic subculture in New York City.
*"Welcome to the Dollhouse" (1995), Thursday, March 26. Todd Solondz's twistedly funny portrayal of junior high school, through the eyes of 11-year-old Dawn Wiener. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
*"Roger and me" (1989), Thursday, April 2, in Grant Science 153. Michael Moore's acerbic, disturbingly funny look at the devastating impact of General Motors plant closings on his hometown community of Flint, MI.
*"Kolya" (1996), Thursday, April 16. A middle-aged, crotchety Czech musician finds himself caring unexpectedly for a five-year-old Russian boy, abandoned by his mother. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
All films are at 7 p.m. in Allen Lecture Hall (except "Roger and Me"). The series is sponsored by the Provost's Office and the Mansfield Activities Council.
