Cultural Alliance to sponsor talk by gunsmith
Gunsmith Charlie Gansell of Picture Rocks, PA, will give a presentation of his work on Monday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. at the Lambs Creek Sportsmens Club outside of Mansfield.
The talk is sponsored by the Lambs Creek Sportsmens Club, the Northern Tier Cultural Alliance at Mansfield University's Center for Arts and Folklife, and the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Gansell learned gunsmithing from his father who maintained a business converting WW II army rifles into sporting rifles. Gansell helped by doing the time-consuming metal inlaying. After a long apprenticeship Gansell's reputation for quality work grew to equal his father's.
Gansell specializes in reproducing Pennsylvania long rifles and pistols from the 1700s and early 1800s. More than 100 tools are used in fabricating his pieces, which incorporate materials ranging from brass and sterling silver hardware, to premium hardwoods, such as curly maple and burled walnut.
A selection of Gansell's muzzle loaders are currently on display through Feb. 14 in the exhibit, "From Heart to Hand: Folk Arts of the Northern Tier," at Mansfield University's North Hall Gallery.
To reach the sportsmen club, drive west out of Mansfield on Route 6 one-quarter of a mile, cross the bridge and take the first right on Lambs Creek Road. Remain on Lambs Creek Road for 4.7 miles to Sportsmen Club Road. Take a right and the club is located one-quarter mile on the left.
For further information please call the Center for Arts and Folklife at 4663 or the Lambs Creek Sportsmen Club at 570-662-7850.
They're making a habit of this
Before you whack the Updater editor for yet another bad pun, you might want to take in showing of MU Theatre's spring musical, "Nunsense Jamboree" Feb. 25-28 in Straughn Hall.
Those familiar with Dan Goggin's charming and wacky nuns from "Nunsense" and "Nunsense II" have an idea of what awaits them in the latest installment.
And those who didn't see the earlier productions will still love "Sister Amnesia's Country Western Nunsense Jamboree" as it promises to be a rollicking, hilarious hoedown.
Show times are 8 p.m. on Feb. 25-27, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Feb. 28.
