Governor Stone "Returns" For Fabulous 1890s Weekend
One hundred years after being elected Governor of the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, MU alumnus William Stone will "return" to
Mansfield to take part in the Fabulous 1890s Weekend on September 24-25. Stone, portrayed
by Jim Welch of Mansfield, will serve as Grand Marshal of the Motorless Parade on Saturday
the 25th. Following the parade the Governors inauguration will be
re-enacted. The Reverend Robert Greer, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in
Wellsboro, which was Stones home church, will play the part of the Reverend Augustus
C. Shaw and administer the oath of office. Shaw was Governor Stones pastor during
his term in office.
Stone, an 1868 graduate of Mansfield State Normal School, served
in the Civil War before coming to Mansfield. He enlisted under an alias because he was
underage at the time of the war. After graduating, Stone taught school in Wellsboro,
practiced law, served as Tioga County District Attorney and as a United States Attorney
for Western Pennsylvania. He was elected to congress in 1890 and served there until being
elected governor in 1899.
Governor Stones return is just one of the many exciting
events on the Fabulous 1890s Weekend schedule. Its no exaggeration to say that
there will be something for everyone, culminating with a spectacular fireworks display
after the re-enactment of the first night football game on Saturday, September 25.
Admission for the entire weekend is $2. For more information on
the Fabulous 1890s Weekend check the MU website at www.mnsfld.edu under special events.
Comedy Kicks off Fine Arts Series
The comedy of Chicago City Limits will lead off The MU
Fine Arts Series this year. The troupe, which is New Yorks longest running comedy
revue, will bring its unique style of improvisational theater to Straughn Hall on
Thursday, September 30 at 8 p.m.
In its 20 years of existence Chicago City Limits has
performed all over the country and has made many appearances on television. Called
"hysterical and unpredictable" by the New York Times the comedy troupe
creates a one-of-a- kind theatrical experience by taking suggestions from audience members
and creating scenes, ranging from mini-musicals to game shows, on the spot. The result is
an evening of hilarious, sidesplitting humor.
Taking its name from the city where it was founded, the comedy
troupe moved to New York City in 1979 and began performing regularly at some of New
Yorks premier comedy clubs including Catch a Rising Star, The Improv and The Comic
Strip.
Tickets for Chicago City Limits are $5 at the door. The
event is free to Mansfield students, faculty and staff. Chicago City Limits is
sponsored by the MU Fine Arts Committee.
Season tickets for all six Fine Arts offerings this year will
also be available at the show. For more information call (570)662-4444 or visit the Fine
Arts section on the Mansfield University website at www.mnsfld.edu.

Despite a heart-breaking 4-3 overtime loss to York College
Sunday, the field hockey team broke into the top 10 of the NFHCA NCAA Division II National
Coaches poll at 10th place. It marks just the second time in school history the field
hockey team has been nationally ranked. In addition, freshman scoring sensation Gretchen
Reschke was named the PSAC Field Hockey Player of the Week for her outstanding performance
which included a hat trick in a win over Marywood. The women will host Franklin Pierce and
Bryant College in two key regional contests this weekend. The Franklin Pierce game is set
for Saturday with Bryant slated for Sunday. Both games have a noon starting time at
Spaulding Field.
Sophomore Nichole Beckel took top honors to lead the women's
cross-country team to a win over SUNY-Brockport, Baptist Bible and LeMoyne last Saturday.
Beckel broke the tape with a first place time of 20:35.92, almost a minute ahead of her
nearest competitor. Freshman Sarah Sokoloski finished fifth with Junior Kristen Clark
sixth and FreshmanTheresa Stanford eighth. Freshman Eric Hayford was third overall in the
men's competition. Both the men and women travel to Baptist Bible Saturday.
The football team will host Ithaca College this Saturday at Karl
Van Norman Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Senior running back Lee Brannon ranks among
the PSAC leaders after rushing for 117 yards and two touchdowns in the opening game of the
season. The football team will join with the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA)
in sponsoring the National Child Identification Program at Saturday's game. Free child
identification kits will be distributed to fans at the game. The kits contain inkless pads
that are a clean and easy way to store the fingerprints of your children in your own home
and provide identification in case of an emergency.
The softball team will host its Fall Classic this Saturday at
Helen Lutes Field.
The baseball team dropped a 15-5 decision to LeMoyne last Sunday
and will host Ithaca College this Saturday at Shaute Field. First pitch is set for 10 a.m.
